welcome to year 1

Class Teacher: Miss J Dickson

Teaching Assistants: Miss A Boss (PM) Miss E Wrightson (PM)

Your child will read with an adult at least once a week and receive up to two new books every time their books are changed, so it is important that your child brings their zippy plastic wallet along with their reading records and reading books to school EVERY DAY. If book wallets are not brought in then we can not change your child's books.
Please try and read with your children every day and ask them questions to support their comprehension and understanding of the book. Sometimes your child may bring home the same book - this is to encourage knowledge and understanding and reinforcement of a story or vocabulary. Repetition can help children to learn and build on their reading skills, using familiar stories and texts.

Please ensure that your child's diary is signed once you have read with them. If there is no record of this, your child's book can not be swapped.

Thank you for your understanding.

Physical Education

The children have a regular PE lesson every Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school everyday - the school's guidance is that these remain in school until the end of a half-term when they can be taken home and washed. As with all uniform, please can all items be named, as it makes it far easier to find individual children's items should they become misplaced.

Please remember that earrings must not be worn on PE days for the safety of both your child and ‚Äčthe other children. Long hair should also be tied back.

Bottles of water should be brought every day to keep children hydrated and better able to learn but especially on PE days when children can become quite hot and sweaty.

Weekly Spellings

Your children will bring home new spellings to learn every Friday for a spelling test the following Friday giving them just over a week to learn these. All spellings will be based around a sound we have been focusing on that week in phonics, so we would encourage you to help your child learn these at home.

Thank you for your support! smiley

Your child will recieve a homework grid at the start of each half-term. Please do not worry if they lose their paper copy - you can easily access a hard copy below!

In Year 1 the activities are not always written - lots of them are verbal. The activities are linked to what your child will be learning in school during that half-term so none of them should be too hard for them to complete.

***Reminders and Notices***

Please could you ensure that all of your child's possessions are named. This includes all uniform, including ties, trousers and jumpers (as children do get fully changed on PE days), water bottles, coats, hats, scarves and book bags.

School policy is that children should only bring water in water bottles please. No toys from home should be brought in to prevent things being lost or damaged.
